Windows 7 is meant very lean as well and is much faster than Vista. We installed it on a very old laptop and it was quicker than XP.
The competition between Apple and Microsoft can only be a good thing. Microsoft have some great technology, they just don't market it very well at times.

Perhaps it's meant to be rubbish. There is a theory that it is designed to make smug mac fans forward it to their PC loving colleagues in an attempt to show them the error of their ways. So the mac fans become the viral agents. Not just genius. Evil genius.
