To Kindle

A few months ago I posted the question 'to Kindle or not to Kindle' -- and based on the very unscientific 'best thing I got for Christmas' responses on Twitter and Facebook, apparently the answer is affirmative.

Some of the reasons:

'I can hold it in one hand whilst I breastfeed' - from a new mum

'Perfect for vacation' - from someone going skiing with lots of kit

'I get my daily fix of the New York Times minus the advertising' - from someone who obviously doesn't work in advertising :)

I still don't have mine -- holding out for what I think will be the biggest gadget news of 2010 -- the Apple tablet -- but doubt 2010 will end without my caving in and buying one.

Any Proxipeople get one?

Personally I have never seen the point of a Kindle. I like the feel of a real book. Also, it is not in colour. Not sure I would want to sit on the beach with £200 of electronics. The syncing of content is interesting, but will it take off?

For a student with lots of text books, the ability to carry them all in one device would be very handy I would think. I would not be surprised if Universities start to give them to students.

One question I have not seen asked is having to have 2 devices. The advantage of the iPhone is having your phone and media in one device. Do you want to carry a 2nd one again. Even Apple's rumoured 10" tablet would mean having to carry 2 devices and a 10" device doesn't really fit in a pocket.

I tend to disagree: The Apple Tablet is not the biggest gadget news. This time it's Microsoft with the "Courier"

Good point, Michael -- already have an Air and an iPhone -- plus BB and laptop for work -- so at times already carrying four devices. Am told though that it isn't so much the portability that's made the Kindle a life changer, but rather to your point the quick synching -- and the content, not just books, but full up-to-date versions of multiple periodicals all at fingertips.

Re 'Courier', nothing Microsoft's developed to date has done much for me design wise, or held a candle to Apple gadget wise IMHO -- but guess proof will be in the proverbial pudding should the products launch.
